You Are Loved
I created You Are Loved to lay bare the raw, overwhelming weight of inner turmoil, while weaving in the quiet, vital truth that love and connection remain present, even when we feel most lost or afraid. Every choice in this work was made to capture the agonising struggle of being trapped inside your own mind, haunted by memories, regrets or fears that feel as real and threatening as the shadows surrounding you. The figure’s posture, hands pressed hard against his head, body tense and muscles strained, speaks of unbearable pressure, of trying to block out the noise, the pain and the haunting thoughts that refuse to fade. The faint, drifting skulls in the swirling magenta and purple haze are deliberate symbols, representing the ghosts of the past, mistakes made, losses suffered and all the things we carry that feel like they might consume us.
I chose these intense, rich shades of pink, purple and violet to create an atmosphere that is both suffocating and strangely tender. These colours were selected not only to show the heat and intensity of emotional pain, but also to hold a softness within them, a hint of warmth and compassion that cuts through the chaos. The way light falls across his body, highlighting strength alongside vulnerability, was important to me, as I wanted to show that even in our darkest moments, we still possess resilience, even if we cannot feel it ourselves. The loose, expressive brushwork and the hazy, indistinct background give the whole scene a dreamlike, nightmarish quality, mirroring how anxiety and depression can make the world feel unsteady, unclear and overwhelming.
Yet, the heart of this piece is its title and its message. Amidst all this struggle, this confusion and this pain, You Are Loved is a reminder, both to the figure and to anyone looking at the work, that you are never truly alone. I wanted to show that love does not vanish because we are hurting, it does not retreat when we are broken or afraid, it surrounds us even when we cannot see or feel it. The very colours that create the tension are also colours of warmth, affection and care, a visual promise that there is something greater than the darkness, holding you, seeing you and loving you exactly as you are. This painting is an honest portrayal of suffering, but it is equally a declaration of hope, a testament that no matter how heavy the burden, or how loud the ghosts may be, you are loved, you matter and you are worth saving.
