Why Tenby?
In 2017 I decided I needed to balance my dedication between work and life, following changes to my personal life situation. In doing so I found myself moving to Pembrokeshire and the picturesque seaside town of Tenby.
Buzzing with holidaymakers from Easter through to September, then reflective with locals, ramblers and dog walkers in the Autumn and Winter, Tenby is a hidden jewel. Part of the National Park, there are miles of beaches leading to the harbour then up into the pastel painted town where St Mary’s Church sits proudly at its centre.
In 2019 I opened Crafty Latte - a small hobbies, crafts, gaming and coffee shop - which ignited my passion for artwork, creating scenes for postcards. After customer enquires I took the bold move to have my artwork printed onto small canvases, ideal for holidaymakers to take away as memories of their visit.
Captured in this painting is the striking facade of Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru (the Wales Millennium Centre), an architectural icon of Cardiff Bay. Known for its copper-colored steel dome and the powerful inscriptions carved into its glass, the building is a celebration of Welsh heritage and creative spirit.
In my work, I wanted to emphasize the bold, sweeping curves and the unique texture of the "slate" and metal materials that define its structure. By focusing on the dramatic upward angle, I’ve aimed to mirror the sense of ambition and inspiration the Centre represents. The play of light across the golden panels brings out the warmth of the building, set against the backdrop of the historic Pierhead Building and the modern Ferris wheel, bridging the gap between Cardiff’s rich past and its vibrant present.
"Misty Sunrise" captures Tenby Harbour as it stirs beneath a veil of dawn light. Painted with a soft palette of peach and slate, this piece evokes the quiet hush before the town wakes—the boats still, the sea breathing gently, and the pastel buildings bathed in early warmth. I wanted to honour the emotional stillness of that moment, where nostalgia and serenity meet. The castle on the hill stands watchful, anchoring the scene in history, while the mist suggests memory, transience, and the beauty of beginnings. It’s a love letter to Pembrokeshire’s coastal soul.
As the sun rises over Tenby, “Lest We Forget” captures a sacred moment of stillness at the town’s War Memorial in Trafalgar Gardens. This artwork honours the 133 men and women lost in World War I and the 111 who fell in World War II—names etched in stone, stories carried in the sea breeze. The warm glow of dawn isn’t just light—it’s remembrance, resilience, and the promise of peace. In this painting, I wanted to capture the striking character of the Pierhead Building, one of Cardiff’s most iconic landmarks. Often referred to as "Wales' Red House," this Grade I listed building stands as a bold testament to the city’s industrial heritage, its vibrant terracotta facade glowing against the backdrop of Cardiff Bay.
In my work, I’ve focused on the play of light across the water and the rich, warm tones of the brickwork. By contrasting the intricate, Neo-Gothic architecture of the 1897 building with the sleek, modern curves of the nearby Senedd and Wales Millennium Centre, I aimed to reflect the meeting of old and new that defines the Bay today. The presence of the boats in the foreground adds a sense of movement and life, grounding this historic monument in its natural maritime setting.
