Primate Pride
When I created Primate Pride, my aim was to show the deep connection between our ancient ancestors and the modern LGBTQ+ community, to show that identity, diversity and love are part of our natural history, not modern ideas. At the centre stands a strong human figure, his skin painted in the full range of rainbow colours, a bright symbol of pride, freedom and being true to oneself. His pose echoes the stance of early primates, grounded, powerful and unashamed, just as our forebears lived without the limits or judgements later societies placed upon them.
The banana he holds is a simple but meaningful reference to our primate origins, a reminder that expressions of affection, partnership and diverse identities have always existed in the natural world, visible throughout the animal kingdom and deep in our own past. History, biology and nature all confirm that difference and variety are not new, they are fundamental to life itself, just as they were for our earliest ancestors.
Behind the figure, streams of vivid colour flow and twist, blending with patterns that look like modern circuits or energy flows. This represents how our ancient instincts meet modern awareness, how we carry our natural roots forward into today’s world, and how the LGBTQ+ movement is a continuation of the same beautiful diversity that has always existed. Pride is not a break from our history, it is a return to honesty, to being fully ourselves, as nature intended.
This piece is a celebration, a bold, colourful statement that who we are is authentic, timeless and deeply connected to where we come from. It invites you to recognise your own place in this long, rich story, to embrace your truth and to honour the link between our origins and our present. Primate Pride is more than a work of art, it is a reminder of strength, belonging and the enduring beauty of being exactly who you are.
